Discover Trenton: A 1970s British OO Scale Model Railroad Journey.
Welcome to the Trenton project, a 1970s-era British OO scale fictional layout inspired by the East Midlands of the UK, with an emphasis on Nottingham. This website documents the entire build process, including all the trials and errors along the way.
Why the East Midlands?
The East Midlands is a significant region in England, as illustrated below with much more information [here]

It’s where I grew up, worked, and played, making it the perfect backdrop for my layout and dioramas. The river Trent flows through much of the East Midlands, hence the name “Trenton” – not to be confused with Trenton, New Jersey, USA.
The Industrial Charm of the East Midlands
The East Midlands was a hub of industrial activity which extended through the 1970s. This provides ample opportunity to incorporate factories, grime, and run-down housing into the layout. The 1970s marked the beginning of the decline in UK-based manufacturing, coal mining, and heavy industry. Looking back at old photos of Nottingham from that era, it appeared tired and grim, though I didn’t notice it growing up.
Industries of the East Midlands
The region was once home to numerous industries, including:
- Coal Mining: My great grandfather was the Colliery Manager at Sutton Colliery, Stanton Hill, near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.
- Steel: Corby Steelworks
- Ceramics: Multiple companies
- Aerospace: Rolls Royce
- Aggregates: Tarmac, Hoveringham Gravel
- Textiles, Knitwear & Hosiery: Multiple companies
- Cigarettes: John Player
- Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals: Boots
- Electronics: Plessey, Siemens
- Train Manufacturing: Derby Works (ex-LMS/BR)
- Automotive Manufacturing: Jaguar cars, British Leyland
This industrial backdrop offers a rich canvas for my diorama, which will feature diesel motive power, including DMUs, Class 47s, Class 20s, and Deltics, along with rolling stock for coal, aggregates, and steel.
My Vision
This project isn’t just about creating a realistic model; it’s about rekindling my passion for model railroading after a 12-year hiatus and experimenting with my 3D printer. While I’m still planning the Trenton build, I’m constructing this 4×3 ft diorama to enjoy my locomotives and rolling stock.
Note for Rivet Counters.
If you’re into counting rivets on your models, this project may not be for you. However, I’m committed to making it look authentic and giving it my best shot. My modeling skills are slightly above beginner, so I’ll be learning as I go.
