What’s on the Workbench? – April – May 2024

Not as much modeling as I would have liked in the past few weeks. Work and family life took up much of my time.

I had one of my solo motorcycle trips planned for early May. I was going to Death Valley before it got too hot.

Unfortunately, the weather was pretty bad with 50mph winds, so the Harley was out of the question. So I took the truck.

This place is incredible. I know this is a website about model trains, but the natural beauty and desolation of this place warrant a couple of pictures.

Part of the valley floor is pure salt which goes on for miles.

The landscape goes from amazing rock formations to desert sand to volcanoes.

The picture doesn’t do it justice but this is the Ubehebe crater. That’s a 500ft drop down.  (153 meters)

My favorite was the Devil’s Golf Course. We’ve had a lot of rain in California this last winter, and that extended into the Desert. For the first time in 18 years, the lake had water in it. When I got there it was only about 7 inches (17 cm) deep, but it had been about 18 inches (46 cm) the month before. I’m glad I got to see that phenomenon.
