Those new to railroad modeling may be confused by the “Code” number when referring to model railroad track.

 

What Are The Components That Make Up "Track" ?

Before we get into the differences, let’s get back to basics on what makes up “Track” as we know it. 

  1. Rails:

   – Description: The long steel bars that the train wheels run on.

   – Function: Provide a smooth and stable path for trains, guiding their direction and supporting their weight.

   – Additional Info: Rails are typically made of high-quality steel to withstand heavy loads and constant wear.

  1. Sleepers (Ties):

   – Description: The horizontal supports that lay perpendicular to the rails.

   – Function: Keep the rails spaced correctly and distribute the weight of the train to the track bed (ballast).

   – Description: Metal fittings that hold the rails to the sleepers.

   – Materials: Typically made of cast iron or steel.

   – Additional Info: Chairs are used primarily in traditional rail systems, whereas modern tracks often use other fastening methods like clips or bolts.

Model Railroad Track – Code 75, Code 80, Code 100 – What’s that all about?

Those new to the hobby may not realise or be confused by the “Code” numbering of model railroad track.

The commercially available track for the popular scales actually comes in different shapes and sizes.

What on earth does that mean?

The main difference is the “Rail Height”. This is the actual height of the rail as it stands on the

   – Code 80: The rail height is 0.080 inches.
